16 things you should ask before hiring a fitness instructor

When considering hiring a fitness instructor, it's important to ask the right questions to ensure they are qualified, understand your goals, and are a good fit for you. Here are 16 questions you should ask:

1. What are your certifications and qualifications?

Ensure they have credible certifications.

I endeavour to train in new modalities at least every 18 months. After 27 years the list is substantial.

 2. How many years of experience do you have?

Experience can provide insight into their expertise and reliability.

I've got 27 years working in the health and fitness sector.

3. Do you have experience working with clients who have similar goals to mine?

Whether you're looking to lose fat, build muscle, or recover from injury, this is key.

Luckily for you I specialise in all these things. I can't control what you're eating, but I can guide you, and help you realise WHY you're not satisfied with your shape and how to go about tweaking daily habits.

4. Can you provide references or testimonials from past clients?

 - Hearing from others can give you confidence in their ability.

You can find testimonials on my website which are updated regularly. My testimonials go back 20 years.

5. How do you assess a new client’s fitness level?

 - Look for an instructor who prioritises safety and personalised training.

All sessions can be adapted to suit your ability. I also like to get to know new clients by having a 20 min zoom call, to assess where you're at. Whether you're coming back from injury even surgery, or need a new motivation. I've got you, we can assess your goals and ensure they're measurable.

 6. What is your approach to designing a workout program?

 - Understand their philosophy and whether it aligns with your preferences.

I shake it up regularly around simplistic, effective exercises.

7. How do you track progress and adjust the program over time?

 - This shows their commitment to helping you achieve results.

I am fully contactable within working hours for any questions, shares and always get back to my clients within 24 hours.

8. What is your availability and scheduling flexibility?

 - Ensure their availability matches your schedule.

9.  How do you handle clients with injuries or special conditions?

 - An experienced trainer should know how to modify exercises safely.

10. What is your training style?

 - Determine if their style (e.g., motivational, tough love, supportive) suits your personality.

You won't know until you participate whether our rapport is right for you. I don't take it personally if our compatibility isn't aligned. Dropped that shi* years ago.

 11. Do you offer nutritional guidance as part of your training?

 - Nutrition plays a big role in fitness; some trainers offer advice or meal plans.

I can guide you, but not control your Cookie Monster snack attack mentality. The Eat the Rainbow WhatsApp group has been inspirational for a lot of my customer.

12. What equipment do you use in your training sessions?

 - Ensure their equipment and methods align with your preferences (e.g., free weights, bodyweight exercises).

You need 3-5kg hand weights, a broomstick, for 2 of the weight training sessions each week.

13. How do you stay current with the latest fitness trends and research?

 - A good trainer keeps up with industry developments to provide the best advice.

4. What is your cancellation and refund policy?

-Understand the financial commitment and flexibility.

I'm bringing in a minimum commitment of 3 months for people that want to subscribe.

Otherwise you can sign up for one month and if its not working, you don't sign up the next month.

15. How do you motivate clients who struggle with staying on track?

 - Motivation techniques are crucial for long-term success.

We can schedule a coaching session to uncover your limiting beliefs. All Reset clients have access to a special rate for coaching to address this.

 16. Do you have liability insurance?

 - Professional liability insurance is important for your protection.

Obvs.

These questions and my answers will help you make an informed decision, ensuring that your fitness instructor is well-qualified, aligns with your goals, and can offer the support you need to succeed.
